December is your last chance to organise your finances before 2027. A little preparation now could help you save money, avoid missed deductions and start the new year with fewer financial surprises.

Here are five things to check before 31 December:

1. Review tax-deductible expenses: Collect receipts for work equipment, professional expenses, donations and childcare. For 2026, employees can claim €6 per eligible home-office day, up to €1,260. The employee tax allowance is €1,230.

2. Check your insurance: Compare health, car, household and liability insurance. Review premiums, coverage and cancellation deadlines before renewing.

3. Cancel unused subscriptions: Check streaming services, gym memberships, apps and other recurring payments. Cancel anything you no longer use, following the contract notice period.

4. Organise important documents: Keep payslips, donation receipts, insurance statements, childcare invoices and work-related expense records together. You generally need to keep receipts available, not submit them automatically with your tax return.

5. Check your tax deadline: If you must file your 2026 tax return yourself, the general deadline is 31 July 2027.

A few hours of financial organisation now could make a real difference next year.
