Since 1 July 2026, Bürgergeld has been replaced by “Grundsicherungsgeld.” The change is more than a simple name change: the government has introduced stricter obligations and puts greater emphasis on getting people into employment.
Work Comes First | Arbeit hat Vorrang
Under the new system, finding a suitable job generally takes priority over training or further education. However, training and qualifications can still be supported when they offer a better route to sustainable employment.
For people who are able to work, cooperation with the Jobcenter is now particularly important.

Missed Appointments Can Cost You | Termine nicht verpassen
One of the biggest changes concerns sanctions.
If you repeatedly miss a Jobcenter appointment without a valid reason, your standard benefit can be reduced by 30% for one month. Other breaches of obligations — such as refusing suitable work without a valid reason — can also lead to a 30% reduction for three months. In certain cases, refusing suitable work can result in a complete withdrawal of the standard benefit.
There are protections: reductions do not apply when an important reason is established or where the reduction would cause exceptional hardship.
What About Rent? | Was ist mit der Miete?
The Jobcenter can continue to cover reasonable housing and heating costs for eligible recipients. What is considered reasonable depends on local limits and the individual situation.
Already Receiving Bürgergeld? | Schon Bürgergeld bezogen?
You generally do not need to submit a completely new application simply because of the reform. Existing recipients continue to be supported, and existing decisions remain valid. When an approval period ends, however, a renewal application may be necessary.
🔎 The Bottom Line
The biggest message is simple:
The money hasn't simply disappeared — but the rules around receiving it have become stricter.
If you receive Grundsicherungsgeld, keep your Jobcenter appointments, respond to requests, report changes promptly and take agreed steps toward employment.
