How owning AI deployment expands your career

Across product, ops, and CX teams, a new kind of role is taking shape: the person responsible for making AI actually work, day to day.

On July 16, three people living this shift join a live roundtable: Simone Santiago Broad (Yoco), Yelva Espinoza (Zumba Fitness), and Fin's Dave Lynch. You'll hear what the job really looks like across industries, how they carved out these roles, the skills they'd hire for, and the challenges they're tackling now. Bring your questions, since the best moments happen live.

Register for the roundtable to save your spot.

Hey {{first_name|there}} β€” welcome to the new German Diary format: Germany, explained in 5 minutes, every Tuesday. Every item is self-contained, every link shows its read time, and news always comes with what it means for you. Let's go.

πŸ“Œ Big Story

The Anmeldung β€” do this before anything else

Your bank account, tax ID (Steuer-ID), health insurance β€” all of it waits on the Anmeldung (residence registration). The fastest path:

  1. Get an address first β€” even temporary. Dorm, sublet, Airbnb all work. Have your host sign the WohnungsgeberbestΓ€tigung on day one.

  2. Book the BΓΌrgeramt immediately. Slots run 2–4 weeks out. Cancelled slots drop around 7–8am β€” check daily and you'll often get in within days.

  3. Bring: passport, completed Anmeldung form (download in advance), signed landlord confirmation.

  4. Walk out with your Meldebescheinigung β€” keep copies, everything else asks for it.

πŸ“Œ Bottom line: register within 14 days of moving in. The late fine is rarely enforced β€” never worth testing.

πŸ“’ TOGETHER WITH GERMAN DIARY

Moving on a student visa? You'll need a blocked account (Sperrkonto) before your visa appointment β€” it takes 1–2 weeks to open. Fintiba and Coracle both work from your home country, in English. Start now, not after acceptance.

πŸ—žοΈ Germany This Week

New sick leave rules require a doctor visit from day one (2 minute read)
Germany is tightening the Krankschreibung rules β€” a doctor's note may be required from the first day off, not the third.
Why it matters: if you're employed here, don't wait until day 3 to see a doctor when sick. Ask your employer what their policy is now.

Berlin passes law to crack down on illegally high rents (3 minute read)
A new rent register will flag overpriced contracts and fine landlords.
Why it matters: if you rent in Berlin, your contract may already violate the Mietpreisbremse β€” you can check and claim money back.

Chancenkarte: job-search visa without a job offer (4 minute read)
Germany's points-based Opportunity Card is fully active. Recognized degree + work experience may qualify you to job-search here for up to a year.
Why it matters: check the free official eligibility calculator before paying any agency a cent.

πŸ’Ό Work & Money

Best bank setup for newcomers (3 minute read)
N26 opens fastest for new arrivals; Deutsche Bank works pre-Anmeldung in some cities. Use Wise for international transfers while you set up. (Affiliate links β€” they keep this newsletter free.)

Your first German payslip will confuse you (5 minute read)
Gross vs. net is a bigger gap here than in most countries β€” insurance, pension, and charges take ~35–40%. Full breakdown next issue.

πŸŽ“ Student Corner

Accepted to a German uni? Do these 3 things this week (2 minute read)
(1) Confirm enrollment and get the acceptance letter. (2) Open the blocked account β€” the visa appointment needs proof. (3) Book the embassy appointment now; slots fill months out.

⚑ Quick Hits

  • BΓΌrgerbot (Berlin) snipes cancelled BΓΌrgeramt slots for you β€” worth it

  • Download your city's Anmeldung form before the appointment, not at it

  • Blocked account minimum changes yearly β€” check the current 2026 rate on make-it-in-germany.com

  • Keep a PDF scan of your Meldebescheinigung on your phone β€” it's asked for constantly

  • German offices love paper. A cheap folder of printouts beats any app

πŸ’¬ Reader Question

"I just got accepted to a German university. What's the first thing I should do?"

In order: confirm enrollment β†’ open the blocked account (1–2 weeks, needed for the visa) β†’ book the embassy appointment. They run in parallel β€” don't wait on any of them. Hit reply with yours β€” I read every email.
