Deutsche Bahn quietly launched a summer Familienticket, and if you've got kids and a free weekend before mid-September, it's one of the best travel deals in the country right now. The catch is small but real, and the way to actually find it in the app is not obvious. Let's decode it.

The catch worth knowing
There's really only one condition: a child has to be travelling with you. No child in the group, no Familienticket. Beyond that, it's five seats for €99.99 with reservations baked in — which is where the value hides. Book five separate long-distance tickets with seat reservations in peak summer and you're usually well past €100 before anyone's even sat down.
The quiet genius is the group of five. It doesn't have to be one nuclear family — as long as one child is aboard, that's five people moving across the country for the price of a single flexible ICE fare.

This trips people up, so here's the trick: on the Deutsche Bahn website, the Familienticket option only appears in the journey search if you tick that you're travelling with children. Miss that box and you'll never see the €99.99 fare — you'll just see the normal prices and assume the deal isn't real.
So: search your route, add your travellers, and make sure the "travelling with children" option is switched on before you compare prices.
Where €99.99 can take you
Valid across the states — and across the border.
Here's the part most coverage buries: the ticket is valid for journeys across the German federal states and beyond. Deutsche Bahn has been expanding its cross-border network, so this isn't just a Berlin-to-Munich deal.
Recent additions include 17 new services to Poland, plus connections to Copenhagen and Paris. In other words, a family of five could, in theory, cross an international border for €99.99. If you've been meaning to show the kids a bit of Europe, this is a rare window to do it cheaply — and slowly, out the window, instead of from 30,000 feet.
Why DB is doing this
As air travel gets more expensive, Deutsche Bahn is making a play for the family market. This ticket lands alongside a broader push: DB has frozen ticket prices until May 2027, introduced discounts for short-notice ICE and IC bookings, and made BahnCard25 free for young people.
