Hallo from Düsseldorf! ⚽
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is happening across the USA, Canada, and Mexico — and for the first time in history, it features 48 teams. Even though Germany didn't host this one, watching it from here has its own magic.
Here's everything you need to know to enjoy every match from Germany:
📺 Where to Watch on TV
The good news: most matches are free on public TV.
ARD and ZDF: Germany's free public broadcasters are sharing the broadcast rights. Many group stage and knockout matches will be shown live for free.
MagentaTV (Telekom): Has exclusive rights to some matches. If you're a Telekom customer, check the MagentaTV app.
Sky Sport: Also holds rights for select games. Requires a subscription.
Pro tip: Set up the ARD Mediathek or ZDF Mediathek apps on your phone or smart TV for free, on-demand viewing.
🏙️ Public Viewing Events in Germany
Germany LOVES public viewing, and even though we're not at the 2006/2014 Sommermärchen level, cities will still set up screens:
Düsseldorf: Rheinuferpromenade is a popular spot for outdoor screenings during major tournaments.
Köln, Berlin, München: Major cities typically set up large screens in public squares. Check your local Stadtmagazin or Facebook Events.
Pubs and sports bars: The Irish pubs and international sports bars in your city will show every match. Find your nearest one early — they fill up fast.
⏰ Time Zone: When Do Games Start?
The matches are played in North American time zones, so expect many games to kick off:
Late afternoon: Around 18:00–22:00 CEST (great for evening viewing)
Night games: Some matches could run until midnight or later CEST
Germany itself plays in Group C — check the full schedule at fifa.com.
🇩🇪 Will Germany Go Far?
After the disappointments of 2018 and 2022, expectations are cautiously optimistic. Under Hansi Flick's successor, the DFB team has been rebuilding. Most fans are hoping for at least the quarterfinals.
Personally? I'm watching every Germany match from my Wohnzimmer with Bratwurst and a cold Kölsch 🍺
Here's to a great tournament. Let's see if Die Mannschaft brings the cup home.
